Units << Switch Buttom LW >>

The Unicorn is a mid range unit and the sixth unit received in the campaign. It costs 50 gems to summon one. You first hear about the unicorn when you pass 2-1, then you get into a vampire trap and finally encounter him at 2-3, which after that level, the Unicorn is unlocked in the armory. On 2-4, he runs away and you need to help him to get back to the heroes. You have to wait until beating 2-4 to unlock the ability to summon the unicorn in levels.

If upgraded to Tier 5, the Unicorn becomes a long range unit with a range between that of a Tier 2 Elfy and a Tier 3/5 Elfy.

Behavior[]

The unicorns are very aggressive when they are encountered. When an enemy is in range, the unicorn shoots rainbows out of its horn, damaging the enemy. In tier 3, the unicorn shoots out two rainbows at once. The main function of the unicorn is a quick offence support to help your units against powerful enemies, which makes them very good against weak units like skullys and vamps. The second function later in the game is to provide quick defensive support to save up some hitpoints for other units. The Unicorn is great against groups but lacks a good defense to take down certain bosses (Goregon, Grimm). It's more of a support unit and a first charger to put some damage on the enemy before the hard hitters hit. His special can delay enemies, reverting their focus. When he gets to tier 4, he's more of a defensive unit then an offensive one. At tier 5, he shoots lightning like the tier 4 wizard, damaging all units within its area, and becomes a flying unit, granting immunity to ground hazards. Because the tier 5 unicorn is airborne, a tier 5 unicorn will not be hit by certain attacks, notably the normal attacks of vampires and reaps, and the attacks of tier 3 skully archers, due to their flight height being 50, much higher than any other unit.

Special[]

In tier 1, the unicorn dashes by increasing its normal speed by +400% for 0.58s, and damages any enemy that touches the center of the unicorn's hitbox during this period. This special's damage scales with the critical and special stat, but the critical chance is determined by each individual hit on an enemy rather than the critical hit being applied before the charge to apply to all hits during the special. Players call this "Horn Rush". The horn rush attack is great against groups if you upgrade it high enough. (20 Essence)

In tiers 2 and 3 the horn rush is upgraded: it lasts for 0.93s, and also hits one unit once after 0.33s, but at tier 3, the unicorn increases its speed by +300% while dashing, presumably due to the increased based speed. Most players call this special "Horn Rush 2", which has a range of 125. (40 essence)

The tier 4 Unicorn's special

In tier 4, the unicorn shoots a giant rainbow beam, called the "Rainbow Laser", out of his horn after 0.80s and recovers in 1.6s, which deals damage to all enemies within a range of 500, both in front and behind. Like the Horn Rush specials, this special scales with special and critical, and the critical chance occurs per unit instead of for the entire attack. This special also charms every enemy hit for 3s. (60 Essence)

In tier 5, the unicorn generates a tornado after 0.27s in front of it that travels a distance of 200 which also charms enemies for 4s, with a total recovery animation of 0.93s. The special is called "Tornado" by fans. However, it does not do any damage, and any enemies immune to status effects will instead be pushed towards the right for a distance of 50 over the course of 1.5s, and this is repeated for as long as that enemy is in the tornado. (60 Essence)

Strategy[]

Though it is possible to beat the entire game without ever summoning a unicorn, they are still a great help. They do a lot of damage considering their cost (on tier 4, damage is 120) and they have a high speed and okay health. They're deadly in numbers against almost anything except gargoyles and reaps, which can kill them all fast. They are a great help for most endless wave levels. If you plan on using unicorns, you should at least upgrade them to tier 3.

Tier 5 unicorns have the highest DPS per gem spent, and combined with their high speed and ability to hit multiple enemies, make them a top choice in an army in Monster mode.

Trivia[]

  • The unicorn is one of the few units whose stats in GameClub's rerelease is different from the original, having 10 more base attack than before.
  • The Tier 4 special Rainbow Beam has some tiny bug in the recovery and attack animation switch after the special animation which makes the special less effective (can also be the cause of the reduced slowdown on 2th generation iPods).
  • The credits formerly had a uniquely textured unicorn running with a tier 1 unicorn in the ending credits, this is presumably the unicorn mentioned in the ending text for Spike.
  • Strangely, when the unicorn does its special in tier 4, enemies behind it will also be damaged. This is because the ability is actually set to be an AoE affecting one lane that damages enemies instantly within a certain radius.
  • Sometimes, when an enemy is attacked by the rainbow, the monster will fight for you for a small amount of time, but you can't control the monster, making it similar to the spell Rainbow Storm.
